Title: SCAM ALERT! COLORADO GOLD BURNING MAN TIX ON SR
Post by: redtide on August 09, 2011, 01:15 am
He wants $600 a piece out of escrow.
Don't believe a word this douchebag says.

Some tips from the burning man site:

BUYING A THIRD PARTY TICKET
If you are buying a ticket and want to check to make sure it hasn’t been reported lost, stolen or is part of a known scam - send us an email partiserv(AT)burningman(DOT)com BEFORE you buy it with ALL of the following:
1. The full name of the original ticket holder and the email address they used to purchase the ticket(s)
2. The 8 character ticket serial codes off the back of the ticket(s) as well as the 5 digit number. Without that required information we cannot verify the tickets.

3. If buying a will call ticket ask for the sellers full name, email address used in the transaction and the last 4 digits of their confirmation number. Then email us.
We will let you know to the best of our ability that the tickets have not been reported lost or stolen or used in any kind of scam. But in the end we cannot be responsible for a dishonest person who is running a scam. We just do what we can on our end. Also, please be aware that we may not be able to respond to emails on nights and weekends.

If you are buying a ticket, you are responsible for reading the back of your ticket as well as the Survival Guide for that year. It will be available in July on our website to read online or print out.

SELLING A TICKET
If you want to sell your ticket we ask that you please do not sell it for more than you paid.

How do I sell my physical ticket?
If selling a physical ticket, give potential buyers both sets of codes off the back of the ticket as well as your full name and email address and instruct them to contact us at partiserv(AT)burningman(DOT)com for verification.

How do I sell my will call ticket?
If selling a will call ticket, give out only the last 4 digits of your confirmation number and your full name and instruct them to email us at partiserv(AT)burningman(DOT)com to verify. Note: low income tickets at will call do not have a confirmation number so you only need to give out your name.

Can I sell my low income ticket?
It is perfectly ok to sell your low income ticket but if we are notified that you are selling it for more than face value you will not be eligible to receive one in the future.
(Scholarship tickets – our other program - are NOT for resale or transfer)

SCAM WARNINGS
If you choose to purchase through a third party we highly suggest you meet in person for the tickets and not risk buying through the mail. The ePlaya is a good place to post buying or selling tickets.

WARNING: Fake tickets have been sold in Los Angeles & San Diego. Be careful people! These tickets are reported to have partial foil and are missing some of the printed information on the back. Know exactly what a real ticket looks like before you buy!
We've been made aware of another scam currently happening: several individuals in the UK and Hawaii who are selling Burning Man tickets with a realistic-looking HMTL payment email requiring payment via Western Union Moneygram, which gives you NO recourse in case of non-delivery. The ticket numbers we know of are XNZ4V01F, IWV8111I, and 2Y1S3180, and there may be others. DO NOT pay for any tickets online via Western Union/Moneygram or any kind of direct wire transfer, or you can get scammed ... only use Paypal.

Here are scams to look out for that have happened in the past:
1. Seller gives tickets numbers from another person’s tickets and may even produce photos of the tickets but doesn’t actually possess the tickets, then collects money via mail or Paypal and cuts off contact with buyer. Recourse: possible chargeback through Paypal, no recourse if money order or cash.
2. Seller gives ticket numbers out, collects money and mails an empty envelope or nothing at all. Recourse: possible chargeback through Paypal, no recourse if money order or cash.
3. Seller claims tickets can be printed out at home using a special link they will give out. Collects money and sends bogus email, then cuts off contact. NOTE: BURNING MAN TICKETS CANNOT BE PRINTED AT HOME. Recourse: possible chargeback through Paypal, no recourse if money order or cash.
4. Seller produces fake tickets and sells to people who don’t know what real tickets look like.

HOW TO SPOT A FAKE
We’ve seen some pretty lame copies of tickets in the past, some are simply color photocopies and others are a little more involved, like trying to use glitter fingernail polish to mimic holographic foil. If you know what to look for, you should be able to save yourself the heartbreak and hassle of getting all the way up to the gate and being told you’ve been duped.

There are several security features on the tickets.

There is shiny holographic foil on *both* the front and back. On the front it is the lettering and and in a crisscoss silver pattern, on the back it is the upper and lower rectangle portions of the ticket and the hologram is little circles.

There is also a special raised embossing (stamp) in a custom pattern in the middle of the upper part of the ticket. You should be able to make out the man symbol and read “25th Anniversary” in the circular embossing VERY CLEARLY.

There should be two bar codes in the bottom section of the ticket (one above the stub and one below) with two sets of number/letter codes (that you should check with us before purchasing). The price of the ticket is also in a white rectangle on the top and bottom of the ticket.

Good luck buying and selling and a safe journey to the playa!
